Amerikaanse farmaceut Bristol Meyers Squibb (BMS) neemt intrek in Europa op het Leiden Bio Science park

Bristol Meyers Squibb (BMS), een Amerikaanse farmaceut, heeft een huurovereenkomst getekend voor een kavel van ca. 19.500 m²  op het Leiden Bio Science park. Deze grond zal worden ingezet voor de bouw van een laboratorium gespecialiseerd in CAR T celtherapie voor het produceren en ontwikkelen van celtherapie voor onder meer patiënten met bloedkanker.

BMS is een van de grootste biofarmaceutische bedrijven ter wereld. Deze nieuwe celtherapie-faciliteit op het Leiden Bio Science Park (LBSP) wordt de vijfde faciliteit van BMS wereldwijd en bovendien de eerste Europese faciliteit van de biofarmaceut. Het lab zal worden uitgerust met de meest moderne technologie en productie faciliteiten. De strategische locatie is voor BMS één van de voornaamste redenen geweest om te kiezen voor het Leiden Bio Science park. Zowel de bereikbaarheid van het terrein, als de gunstige locatie in het hart van het Nederlandse biotechnologie gebied, zijn doorslaggevende factoren geweest bij het opteren voor deze locatie.

De locatie is strategisch gekozen vanwege de centrale ligging in het hart van de Nederlandse Bio Science industrie en de connectiviteit met de rest van Nederland. 

Oplevering in 2024
BMS bouwt de komende jaren aan het nieuwe productie- en laboratoriumgebouw met totale omvang van circa 20.000 m². Het nieuwe gebouw omvat 14.929 m² laboratorium en 5.351 m² kantoorruimte en komt te staan aan de Willem Einthovenstraat, tegenover de bedrijven Avery Dennison en Galapagos. De start van de bouw staat voor later dit jaar gepland en is naar verwachting eind 2024 gereed.

Immuuntherapie 
BMS is gespecialiseerd op het gebied van ‘Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cel’ therapie (CAR T cel). De CAR T cell therapie is een methode waarbij patiënten met bloedkanker (bijvoorbeeld leukemie) worden behandeld met hun eigen cellen. Bij de patiënt wordt bloed afgenomen waarna er een gen wordt toegevoegd aan de T cel; een variant van de witte bloedcel. De gemodificeerde cel wordt via het bloed weer ingebracht bij de patiënt en de T cel is nu in staat om kankercellen te lokaliseren en te vernietigen.

American pharmaceutical company, Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS), signed a ground lease for approx. 19,500 sq m at Leiden Bio Science Park. The company will manufacture CAR T-cell therapy for patients with blood cancer.

 BMS is one of the largest biopharmaceutical companies in the world. The new cell therapy facility at the Leiden Bio Science park (LBSP) will be BMS’s fifth facility in the world and the first European facility. BMS’s aim is to bring cell therapy closer to European patients. The facility will have the latest technology and production equipment for cell therapy development, thus enabling the company to increase its capacity for treating cancer patients.

Completion in 2024
BMS will spend the next few years building the new manufacturing and laboratory facility for approx. 20,000 sq m. The building will consists of 14,929 sq m production / lab space and 5,351 sq m office space and will be situated on Willem Einthovenstraat opposite Avery Dennison and Galapagos. Construction will begin later this year and the building should be completed by the end of 2024.
 
Immunotherapy
BMS specializes in Chimeric Antigen Receptor T cell (CAR T cell) therapy, type of cancer immunotherapy where a patient’s own T cells are genetically engineered to recognize and bind to proteins found on the surface of certain cancer cells. Unlike traditional small molecule or biologic treatments intended to treat a broad range of patients, CAR T cell therapy is specifically manufactured for each individual patient using their own T cells.
